Extraposition via Complex Domain Formation

چکیده
We propose a novel approach to extraposition in German within an alternative conception of syntax in which syntactic structure and linear order are mediated not via encodings of hierarchical relations but instead via order domains. At the heart of our proposal is a new kind of domain formation which affords analyses of extraposition constructions that are linguistically more adequate than those previously suggested in the literature. 1 L i n e a r i z a t i o n w i t h o u t p h r a s e

Rule Ordering in Verb Cluster Formation
This paper addresses two puzzles in the domain of verb cluster formation and proposes a solution in terms of rule ordering. The first puzzle is the socalled extraposition paradox where extraposition can target a VP that is part of a verb cluster only if the VP is topicalized but not when the VP remains clause-final. I propose that verb cluster formation takes place at PF under adjacency and thu...
متن کاملTowards an Account of Extraposition in HPSG
This paper investigates the syntax of extraposition in the HPSG framework. We present English and German data (partly taken from corpora), and provide an analysis using a nonlocal dependency and lexical rules. The condition for binding the dependency is formulated relative to the antecedent of the extraposed phrase, which entails that no fixed site for extraposition exists. Our account allows t...
متن کاملExtraposition as Parallel Construal ∗
Extraposition phenomena are traditionally accounted for by extraposition rules, possibly as instances of "move alpha". According to the more recent developments of generative grammar, such as Chomsky's minimalism (1995) and Kayne's antisymmetry theory (1994), extraposition rules are problematic and no longer permitted in any obvious sense. In this article, I will show that there are also numero...
متن کاملThe processing of extraposed structures in English.
In most languages, most of the syntactic dependency relations found in any given sentence are projective: the word-word dependencies in the sentence do not cross each other. Some syntactic dependency relations, however, are non-projective: some of their word-word dependencies cross each other. Non-projective dependencies are both rarer and more computationally complex than projective dependenci...
متن کاملSynthesis of CuO nanorods via thermal decomposition of copper-dipicolinic acid complex
Template-free CuO nanorods were synthesized through a three-step chemical method with no water-insoluble materials. The first step included the preparation of a Cu-complex, which was obtained from dipicolinic acid, L-lysine, and copper nitrate. Then, as the second step, the obtained solution was allowed to be relaxed for a week to and formation of some blue single-crystals single crystals, whic...
